Google Tech Talks May 14, 2007 ABSTRACT Much of what we know about innovation is wrong. That's the bet this talk takes, as it romps through the history of innovation, dispelling the mythologies we've constructed about how we got here. This talk, loosely based on the upcoming O'Reilly book (May 2007), will help you to recognize the myths, understand why they're popular (even if you don't believe in them), and how to use the truth to help you innovate today. Mar 22, 2012 - He wasn't citing relativity to Nature itself, he was citing relativity w/in human society. Seeing as birds do not work/vote/otherwise participate in human society, I don't see reason to include them in a discussion about human innovation - unless, of course, it serves to prove a point. Seems to me that author/supporters simply grasping for any&every context that can possibly "disspell the myth" of innovation. Imo, it's semantics = something I don't care to debate. Thanks though, for the reply.

Mar 22, 2012 - You ARE human, and have feelings! Ok... look. I'm sorry. No offense. However. While objectively your points are valid, subjectively they do not foster the type of thinking and motivation that leads to a willingness to juxtapose where no man has juxtaposed before...

Mar 22, 2012 - For the sake of argument: if the same talk had been given by my good-twin, who worked at a company you admire and think of as an innovative, would your opinion of the talk be any different? If yes, can you take the talk at face value for what it says or doesn't say, rather than for what isn't in the talk? If no, then I'd value your critique of the talk itself, moreso than your critique of my work history.

Mar 22, 2012 - Airplanes weren't much of an innovation for birds. The birds that the Wright brothers, if they could speak, would likely have asked "what the hell is taking you so long". There is a precedent of some kind for all ideas. This doesn't diminish them - it mearly explains that the difference between revolution and evolution typically has more to do with how wide and deep your perspective is, rather than on the ideas involved themselves.

Mar 20, 2012 - I have a problem with this line: "innovation is relative" So airplanes were only innovative relative to.... *what* exactly? Airplanes didn't exist anywhere on the face of the earth until they were invented. Same goes for pretty much all human technology, so how exactly did we get from cavemen to where we are today, if it wasn't innovation? Does technology just fall out of the sky? (Talk about mythology lol).

Dec 1, 2011 - Ironic. "A guy from Microsoft presenting innovation". Comes from an environment where stealing ideas is held on par with innovation, where having a "Balls-mer" attitude is considered innovative. He talks around innovation, makes some interesting points, but I wager has never experienced the culture, mindset, or feeling that encourages innovation, and in fact talks about innovation as if it's this huge struggle, which it obviously is... from inside Microsoft.

Jan 10, 2010 - Nice lecture! I like the parts where he brings innnovation from all over history to compare to modern vision of what innovation is. Must confess I was suspicious at the beggining 'cos he was promoting his book fiercely.

Jan 9, 2010 - When someone starts a lecture talking about their prizes and books, as they were best-sellers, etc, I begin to get suspicious about their capacity... A popular book is trash to real things 'cos common people don't have a clue about research and multidisciplinary thinking. Like self-help books... I'm sick of those books in the business world. Just started to watch, hope it's a good lecture...
