May 19, 2012 - it give me the option but wouldn't let select it unless i have drivers for it? chskdsk or pctools or something and select from which drive! i'm guessing is what i needed, any ideas?
May 10, 2012 - If the OEM copy you got is still in the box and sealed then it should be ok to use, but if you got it without the box or original packaging, even with the product key, then it may not be valid to use. The main difference about OEM and Retail is that once the OEM version of windows is installed, it is TIED to that motherboard it was installed on,Unlike retail you can transfer your installation to a new motherboard. but i think you need some assistance from Microsoft to do so.
May 10, 2012 - If you're just using the system recover feature on the disc you should be fine, the key should not be required. As long as you don't change the motherboard, you shouldn't have to worry about getting a new disc.
Apr 19, 2012 - i got a question. can i do a system recovery with the win 7 oem and use the same key that it cam with. (im not changing any hardware.) im just aafraid that if i do a recovery that ill need to but another windows 7 disk.
Apr 10, 2012 - i just got a copy of windows 7 home premium sp 1 64 bit and im wondering is the oem locked to the motherboard model or can I one day update to another Asus Motherboard current motherboard is Asus also.
Feb 19, 2012 - I got Window 7 Professional and Window 7 OEM Disk.
which should i use? OEM or Win 7 PRO?
im confused now -_- and now im using Window XP Professional SP3.
Please HELP ME. I DONT WANT TO TAKE RISK.
Jan 30, 2012 - Actually retail is a better deal considering OEM versions of windows are limited to being installed ONCE on ONE motherboard while retail versions can be installed infinitely on new systems.
Jan 4, 2012 - how can i format my whole pc and install the cd? i have to install it from desktop cuz i cant set boot priority to cd. when i do that i get a w7 screen only... or does the installer format ur pc?
Dec 19, 2011 - Ya know, this was just an FYI to show people the process... if you don't have anything to say then not saying anything would have been the better idea!
Dec 14, 2011 - so do i go for the Windows & OEM version or the full retail version for an extra £30? I have been told that the OEM version is a 1 install copy and can only be installed on 1 motherboard, is this correct?
Dec 10, 2011 - Essentially the differences are that the "retail" has a warranty direct from MS and can be transferred between computers under certain circumstances. OEM has a warranty from the company you buy it from, and usually cannot be transferred except under "extreme" circumstances. Oh, and the OEM is usually cheaper...
Dec 9, 2011 - Did you just install this by putting the disc in and following the on screen instructions? I read somewhere that you need to install something prior to this...
Nov 6, 2011 - If I understand you right, yes you can use the OEM to "re-install windows 7. But, all your old information would have been deleted if you did a full install of the win 8 beta... you would have kept your data if you had done an upgrade, at this point your old data is gone and not too much you can do to get it back...
Sorry for the bad news :(
Sep 29, 2011 - I'm confused! Lets say that I bought a new laptop that comes with Windows 7 64-bit and I was stupid enough to install Windows 8 Developer Preview over it and now I can't access my Windows 7. Can I use the OEM version instead of the retail one? and If I do install it on my computer will I lose anything that came with the computer?
Please have in mind that I did not upgrade my computer in anyway.
I fucked up my Asus G74sx laptop....yeah! I know. You can fell sorry for me, because I do too
