May 3, 2012 - Hi Sam! I have a brand new heavy duty Singer sewing machine and want to take in a lambskin leather jacket (that I love and won't part with) because I lost weight. Do you think my machine will be able to handle it as the leather's real soft or should I just bring it to a seamstress? I really don't want to pay the extra money if I can do it myself. Thanks!

May 1, 2012 - Buying a needle won't help if your machine is from walmart. Unless you're only working on leather once or twice in your life, your machine with its plastic parts and weak motor won't have enough power to sew leather very often. Even if you follow this tutorial, you're going to screw up the machine's tension and timing by sewing leather. For the needle, you should look for a store that caters to leatherworking. Don't go back to walmart

Apr 1, 2012 - Have the needle now, but using nylon thread, as beneficial, is great. Thanks for taking time!

Mar 26, 2012 - hey sam, thanks for your tips! wondering how you keep the feeder feet from marring certain smooth leathers? i repeatedly end up with a track mark on some leather. it doesn't work to drop feed because then it doesn't feed at all. thanks!!! leza

Jun 21, 2010 - Will the machine sew through 4 layers of the leather? There will always be areas where two seams must be sewn together. An old White Rotary treadle sewing machine will sew through as much as you can get under the presser foot. I've used old treadles for heavy canvas and had no problem. They are all metal, simple and you can service them yourself.
