To ensure that pedestrians in urban settings will hear them, the brand has developed a synthetic solution: Audi e-sound. Sound is an especially exciting aspect of a vehicle. Although it can be described in physical terms, there is no substitute for experiencing it firsthand. A car's sound is emotional, not intellectual. Although we consciously register a car's sounds only occasionally while on the road, they are always there -- playing a crucial role in the driving experience. Sounds send signals. Low-range frequencies suggest power and composure, while mid-range frequencies emit sportiness and agility. In a series-production Audi, a combustion engine currently supplies the music. Conversely, the motor in an electric-powered e-tron is not an option, as it is too quiet and its high frequencies are not exactly melodious. Audi's e-tron models will therefore feature a synthetic sound signature. Rudolf Halbmeir teamed up with his colleagues Axel Brombach and Dr. Lars Hinrichsen to create it. Bernd Kopacek, managing director of SAT in Austria, explained: "We have developed a machine which is mobile, that means we can move from one recycler to another recycler and extract rare and precious substances from electronic waste, mainly metals, like for example, gold or silver or copper, or yttrium, lithium and so on." The mobile recycling system sits inside a container - and is currently parked on the outskirts of Belgrade. The idea is to give small recycling companies new ways to extract precious metals from electronic junk. Francesco Veglio, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of L'Aquila in Italy, said: "As an example this is a powder that you find in cathode tubes, but this part of the waste that contains a large quantity of yttrium, nearly 10 per cent, is usually sent to the dump." The TV tubes are waste no more, as they are ground up and poured into the mix. Professor Francesco Veglio: "You could visualise our process as a bit like making coffee in the morning. We call this operation leaching. Water going through a solid that makes the coffee soluble. "Of course to help the recuperation of this element, for example as with the Yttrium that we find in this powder, we add chemical reagents that make this operation possible." ]]> disruptive innovation For the last few years I have been fascinated with Clayton Christensen's theory of disruptive innovation and its application to business, politics, education, and insurgency models. What I find most interesting is that his theory, featured in both "The Innovators Dilemma" and "The Innovators Solution" provides a prescription for a small entrant with less resources to compete with and beat a large incumbent. To understand his theory we begin by looking at a set of customers for a good or service. A simplified segmentation of the market is defined as non consumers, mainstream customers, and higher end customers. The incumbent starts by creating a good or service that appeals to the mainstream consumer. Upon reaching market segment saturation, the company looks up market and innovates on the product to capture the higher end more margin rich segment. Often tech companies competing in the same market play this leap frog game of matching innovation to control more of the commodity market. Clayton defines these as sustaining innovations. In business the process is called profit maximizing resource allocation and the right competitor can use it to force an incumbent out the top end of the market. By continuing to innovate, the incumbent creates bloated products or services that have more value or performance than the consumer can utilize. The logic is that if I can please my most demanding customers then my main stream customers will be also be satisfied, but in reality it <b>...</b>

"We have improved the olive oil extraction process by using a technology based on a pulsed electric field," explained Arturo Portugal, a research engineer at CRIC. In Malagón in central Spain, a small company is testing out a shocking new form of oil extraction. The idea is to shock the olives with an electrical pulse before squeezing them. The brief pulses of a strong electrical field enlarge the pores in the cellular membranes, simplifying the extraction of oil. Arturo Portugal told us: "The electric pulses, generated by this machine, are directed to this electric box where they pass through the olive paste, pumped through the pipes." The result is more oil from the same amount of raw material. What is more, punching open the pores of the fruit with an electric pulse makes it simpler to get the best oil from unripe olives. The owner of Aceites Malagón, Aniceto Gómez said: "To ensure the best quality of oil, it's important to extract it without heating. This project facilitates that process, making it possible to extract oil from the best green olives at ambient temperature." The pilot plant is treating six litres of olive paste per second. Once proven, the technology, developed within an EU project, will be scaled up to full production levels. This can help with the essential task of transforming an eco-innovative project into a real offer on the marketplace. Bamboo as a water treatment system was a creative idea for treating polluted water which was dreamed up by a small French company specialising in ecological water treatment plants. Bamboo filters water without creating bad smells or mud. The problem was, it wasn't adapted for industrial use - until Veronique Arfi, the company's deputy CEO realised that there were European grants for eco-innovation. Veronique Arfi explained: "We used this as an opportunity to gain access to the market, and to industrialise our process, and to get a shop window for future clients." With three other SMEs, Veronique submitted her idea for "Briter Water" to the EU's Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), which agreed to co-finance half of the 700000 euros needed to set up a pilot bamboo project. This was installed on the site of a large company which was also very involved in the projet. Romain Sadak, the Safety and Environmental Coordinator for Refresco France, said: "We put around 300000 euros into the project, so that it wouldn't only be a pilot project but a project which later on, could be a real industrial business, which is exactly what interests us."
